Autosport launches racing driver ranking site

Formula One racing star David Coulthard took to the main stage of the Autosport International show to launch a major new initiative from Autosport.com: the all-new Castrol Rankings.

The Castrol Rankings are a unique rankings system to rate the performance of every race and rally driver across 47 of the world’s leading motorsport championships – from Formula One to world rallying, Le Mans and NASCAR.

The castroldriverrankings.com website harnesses Autosport.com’s database – which is claimed to be the most comprehensive of its kind in motorsport – to analyse the performance of more than 2000 drivers in 500 events, taking into account finishing positions, fastest laps or stage times and positions gained. It then weights the results according to the series in which drivers are competing to deliver the definitive answer to the question: “Who is the best driver in the world?”

Updated every week, the Rankings are a rolling system that takes into account a driver’s performances over the previous 12 months. They can be customised to view results by driver, series or nationality.

Jenson Button currently leads the Castrol Ranking by virtue of winning last year’s F1 world championship, although world rally champion Sebastien Loeb headed the standings for five months during 2009.

Speaking at the launch, Coulthard said: “Now there can be no argument about who the world’s finest is behind the wheel; I would have liked to have had a system like this when I was driving.

“Jenson Button had an amazing season last year, so I am not surprised he is at the top. That said, the competition in 2010 from every discipline will be fierce, so the acid test will be if Jenson can still be at the summit at the end of the year.”

Peter Higham, publishing director of the Motorsport Division, said: “We are delighted to be launching the Castrol Rankings as it illustrates Autosport’s unique breadth and commitment to the whole of world motorsport.”
