Maney extends open access model to the humanities

Maney Publishing has extended its open access (OA) business model, MORE OpenChoice, to its humanities journals.

Nearly sixty journals, including titles in archaeology, history, and language and cultural studies, will be included in MORE OpenChoice from January 2011 onwards. View the list of journals included.

MORE OpenChoice is a business model which co-exists with Maney’s traditional subscription business. The move recognises that interest in open access publishing is now extending from the science, technology and medical sectors into the humanities.

Gaynor Redvers-Mutton, Business Development Manager at Maney Publishing, has led Maney’s open access project: “As research councils and other funders increasingly advocate OA, as more institutions require repository deposit, and as our customers, the library managers, lobby ever more strongly for it, we have listened and responded. The extension of MORE OpenChoice to Maney’s humanities journals is competitively priced with an article processing charge (APC) of £500/US$800, with the aim of helping to stimulate the uptake of OA in subject areas other than purely STM disciplines. The standards applied through peer-review will be applied uniformly and the published output in all our journals will be of the same high quality.”

Lending support to the initiative, Professor Curtis Runnels of Boston University and editor of the Journal of Field Archaeology commented: “JFA is committed to the dissemination of archaeological research to a world community. The distribution of printed copies of the journal on such a scale can be difficult and expensive and it is our hope that the MORE OpenChoice initiative will allow our authors' research results to reach readers around the globe."

Liz Rosindale, Publishing Manager for the humanities list is enthusiastic: “Maney is one of the first academic publishers to offer an open access publishing route for authors and society partners for history and humanities titles. We are particularly excited to be at the forefront of an initiative which will meet the requirements of our authors and their funders as demand for open access options in this area is beginning to take off. In addition, the benefits of easy access to freely available material will extend readership, promoting scholarship to the widest possible audience.”

MORE OpenChoice has been developed in response to the changing requirements of customers. In a dynamic business and with the exciting prospects that digitization of content brings, this is an initiative which ensures that Maney continues to attract the best research which, when published, achieves the maximum impact. MORE OpenChoice papers will provide additional momentum in optimizing dissemination of, and access to, research in specific disciplines.
