Telegraph World Cup app exceeds 100k downloads

The Telegraph World Cup app has soared in the UK’s free World Cup app and Sports app charts, with over 100,000 downloads so far, says the publisher.

The free World Cup iPhone app features news and match reports from The Telegraph’s top football writers, as well as the latest scores, fixtures, results, group tables and photo galleries.

The app’s functionality allows fans to select three of their favourite teams throughout the World Cup, providing one-tap access to the selected teams’ pages to view details of their next match, Telegraph analysis and images of the team in action. A Live Match Centre offers live match commentary, game statistics, and average player positions while Free Push Notifications provide all the breaking news on the groups or stages the user wants to follow.

Coming soon is interactive voting where users can join football fans from around the world to vote for the team that they think should win the game. The voters’ country of origin will be illustrated on the Telegraph’s global consciousness map. The app has been developed in partnership with TigerSpike, the personal media company with a specialisation in mobile.

The World Cup app builds on the Telegraph’s coverage - a first rate team of writers and columnists reporting on the World Cup. The team, led by Henry Winter, the award winning journalist, also includes Michael Owen, the Manchester United and England striker, Roy Hodgson, the Fulham manager, Alan Hansen, the former Liverpool and Scotland defender, Juninho, the former Brazil and Middlesbrough midfielder, the South African legend Lucas Radebe, Ossie Ardiles, the 1978 World Cup winner with Argentina, and George Cohen, star of England's victory in 1966.

A full team of journalists is also in South Africa to cover the World Cup for The Sunday Telegraph, The Daily Telegraph and Telegraph.co.uk including Alan Smith, Kevin Garside, Paul Kelso, Ian Chadband, Duncan White, Jason Burt, Mark Ogden, Jeremy Wilson, Rory Smith and Jim White.

The Telegraph’s World Cup activity is supported by an in-house advertising campaign running for two weeks, which features some of the Telegraph’s writers and columnists portrayed as “Big Game” hunters. In addition, starting today - June 11th, the app and the Telegraph’s experts will be promoted on a digital outdoor campaign.

The Telegraph says that the application performance to date is:

• Over 109,000 downloads of the app in a week.

• Top three of the most popular World Cup apps in the UK.

• Top three Sports Apps in the UK.

• Currently 10th in the Top 25 free apps in the UK.
