Guardian awarded Carbon Trust Standard

Guardian News & Media (GNM) has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard (CTS) in recognition of its work to measure, manage and reduce its carbon emissions by 28% over the past three years.

The Carbon Trust Standard is awarded to UK organisations that have reduced their carbon emissions and have systems in place for carbon management - from policies and investment to people and training.

Achieving the Carbon Trust Standard involved an audit of three years of data at GNM's offices and Guardian Print Centres (GPC) - London and Manchester - and is an assessment of how carbon thinking is embedded into business culture and practice.

The certification process confirmed that GNM reduced carbon emissions by approximately 4,422 tonnes or 28% over the last three financial years (to end March 2010).

Improvements to date have largely been achieved through technical measures and investment, but also through awareness-raising campaigns such as the switch-off campaigns at the print centres.

Other areas of improvement include:

The move to Kings Place achieved a CO2 saving of about 7% compared with our old offices.

A revamp of how the heating and cooling system was run at Herbal Hill achieved a saving of 385 tonnes of CO2 over one year.

The upgrade of GPC Manchester's building systems is expected to achieve an annual saving of about 900 tonnes of CO2.

GNM is about to install smart metering at both Kings Place and GPC London.
