National President Alan Smith (pictured) said: “It’s good to see the Sunday Express continues to recognise the importance of retailers with price increases accompanied with pro rata terms. Publishers who support the retail trade in this manner deserve the backing of NFRN members. Of course, the opposite will occur for those who don’t pro rata.”
The new price was announced alongside a 10p increase for the Star on Sunday which will cost £1 from Sunday. Again this increase is accompanied by pro rata percentage terms.
Commenting on this news, Mr Smith said: “This is undoubtedly a step in the right direction, but as part of our campaign to ensure that members are fairly recompensed for selling newspapers, we are meeting with senior executives from Northern & Shell in January where we will take the opportunity to explore ways to further improve the profits of NFRN members, bearing in mind that independent retailers account for more than half of all newspaper sales.”
