BBC’s Sian Williams to present press awards

Sian Williams will present tonight’s premier awards for British national newspaper journalism in 2011.

Sian (pictured) has stepped in at the last minute to replace Sophie Raworth who had to cry off through no fault of her own.

The Press Awards will take place at a glittering ceremony at the Lancaster London Hotel this evening.

Sian, who is no stranger to awards herself, is the daughter of a Fleet Street journalist.

There were more than 650 entries for the 33 categories in the awards that celebrate the achievements of national newspapers last year, topped off by the coveted Newspaper of the Year title.

The awards help to fund the Society of Editors’ campaigning for press freedom and the Journalists’ Charity.

Sian started her career as a reporter in Liverpool, covering stories like the Hillsborough Disaster and demise of Militant. She was a launch presenter on BBC News 24 and the Special Correspondent of the BBC Six o'clock News.

For the past eleven years, she's hosted BBC Breakfast, making her their longest serving anchor. The audience more than doubled during her tenure and she was made TRIC 2012 Newscaster/Reporter of the year. She is a key member of the BBC1 News-reading team, is the new host of R4's Saturday Live and is presenting from the Olympics.

Chairman of the judges Bob Satchwell, executive director of the Society of Editors said: “We are delighted and grateful to Sian for stepping in at such short notice. As an award winner herself for her terrific TV journalism she will be able to teach us how to do it!”
