The National appoints Manus Cranny
Manus Cranny: “This is a pivotal moment in the global news landscape, and I look forward to contributing to The National’s growth and influence.”

The National, an English-language news outlet headquartered in Abu Dhabi with bureaux in London, Washington DC, Beirut and correspondents in key cities worldwide, has today announced the appointment of Manus Cranny to the newly created position of geo-economics editor, based in the UAE.

In this role, the publisher says Manus will shape The National’s coverage at the intersection of macroeconomics, business and geopolitics in the MENA region and globally. He will lead original reporting, provide strategic editorial guidance to the wider newsroom, offering economic insight and identify key trends and developments within regional economies.

Manus brings more than three decades of experience in business, finance and media.

He joins The National from Bloomberg where he anchored flagship morning news programs across the network from New York, London and UAE delivering breaking market news, data and analysis.

He has reported on major global developments from the European debt crisis to both of President Donald Trump’s election campaigns. Throughout his career, he has interviewed world leaders in finance, energy and foreign policy, including CEOs from UBS, HSBC, Shell and Total.

The National says the creation of the geo-economics editor signals its commitment to expanding and elevating its coverage of global economic and geopolitical developments, at a time of rising interest in the region, global economic uncertainty and a rapidly shifting international order. As The National expands its video offering, the publisher says Manus will be leading video coverage for the biggest geoeconomic stories in the region and beyond.

Manus Cranny, geo-economics editor at The National, commented: “The region has long been central to global economic shifts – and never more so than today. Joining The National at this moment presents a unique opportunity to drive meaningful coverage and delve deeper into the trends and developments shaping regional economies. This is a pivotal moment in the global news landscape, and I look forward to contributing to The National’s growth and influence.”

Mina Al-Oraibi, editor-in-chief at The National, commented: “Manus’ appointment comes at an extraordinary time in both global developments and the media industry. As The National continues to expand its reach and influence, we remain committed to producing world-class journalism with depth, accuracy and impact. This new role was created to deepen and enhance our macroeconomic coverage and Manus, with his wealth of experience and dynamic presence, is the perfect fit. His journalism and insight will play a key role in delivering agenda-setting reporting for our audiences in the region and around the world.”

The National is part of IMI, a leading global privately-owned media group headquartered in the UAE.
