The Regional Press Awards shortlists

The shortlist for the Society of Editors Regional Press Awards was published yesterday.

The Regional Press Awards organised on behalf of the industry by the Society of Editors celebrate the best of British local and regional journalism.

Category judges have studied more than 750 entries in the first stage of the judging process and they will debate the shortlist in preparation for the announcement of the winners at a lunchtime awards ceremony at London’s Park Plaza Riverbank on May 11 hosted by Nick Ferrari of LBC Radio.

The judging system involves independent figures from across the industry chaired by editorial consultant Peter Sands.

Bob Satchwell (pictured), executive director of the Society of Editors, said today: “The judges faced a formidable task and the rare privilege of reading thousands of words gathered together in brilliant entries that reflect the variety, vitality and sheer excellence of local and regional newspapers, which are of course the best in the world.

“In some cases the entries were so strong in quality as well as numbers that it was simply impossible to choose only six for each shortlist.”

Camelot has signed up as the main sponsor of the new Regional Press Awards. The operator of the National Lottery is a long time supporter of Society of Editors conferences and the national press awards.

The awards are organised on a not for profit basis by the Society of Editors in association with the Newspaper Society, HoldtheFrontPage and Press Association. Any surplus will go to the Journalists’ Charity.

On the south bank of the river, the hotel has M16 as a near neighbour and is a stone’s throw from Lambeth Palace. The Park Plaza Riverside affords spectacular views of the Tate Britain, the Houses of Parliament, Big Ben and the London Eye and is perfectly located close to major attractions and historic landmarks.

The awards will take place immediately after the Newspaper Society AGM that will be held at the same venue.

Attendance at the lunch will be at the special inclusive price of £70 plus Vat per person or £700 plus Vat per table to include a pre lunch drinks reception and wine with lunch. Special rates for overnight stays may be available. To book your place, please contact kate.mcmillan@societyofeditors.org.
